Comments from John Chen on Heading West

Heading West is a comedy that is also serious and deep. Artistically, it is fun and challenging. For the creative mind, it is a paradise. Working with Hoyingfung and his Theatre Fanatico productions is always a unique challenge and inspirational. Heading West has given me a creative space that is larger and more complex than other projects in the past. I, particularly, enjoy the opportunity to be able to incorporate so many different music and song genres into a single production. In Hong Kong, most people are familiar with the music-first-lyrics-after process for the production of songs. In this production, words/lyrics were given to me to compose the songs. Although this is a technical challenge, particularly those done in Cantonese, I found it to be a very effective way to write songs that are tailored to the mood of the text as well as each particular actor. Another exciting aspect for me while working on the production is the chance of working with The Omnimus Group again. Every member in the group is musically sound and sensitive and it is a lot of fun to have them play my music. It is even more fun to be able to improvise with these top musicians, and at the same time interacting with the actors and happenings on stage. Being also the sound designer for the production, the work of sound sampling and processing, the selection of instruments for the live group, the creation of the sound effects, and working with both 4-channel and stereo systems, all added to the excitement and the fullness of the whole experience. Lastly (but not less important), I would like to stress that although we use the term "Alternative Music Theatre" to label tonight's production, Heading West is truly a mix-media mix-genre kind of work that is very difficult to label. That is the beauty of it, which may possibly be a seed to a new genre for the new century.
